Leaded light window updated as wall art

This leaded light window has a special place in the heart of its owner. This is because it was saved from her grandmother’s home.

She wanted to have it refurbished so that she could hang it on a wall in her own home as a reminder of her relative.

The antique glass pieces in this leaded light window were very thin so I had to treat it with particular care.

The main part of the refurbishment involved removing the old leads from around the window. This had to be done without causing any damage to the glass. Once the lead was taken off, the remaining leads had to be trimmed back ready for the new edge leads.

The new surround for the leaded light was made from C-profile lead cames. These were filled with leaded light cement to provide additional support for the glass when it was hung up.

The owner wanted the frame to blend in with the existing leads, so I blacked it with patina.

We agreed that hanging loops would be the best option to hang it on the wall. The client decided to buy a chain to suspend it.

I think this was a great way to repurpose an old, but precious, leaded light window to reuse as a work of art.
