Some recent glass lamp repairs

There is never a lot of time elapsed before I receive another Tiffany lamp repair request. Here are a couple I did for a lady whose mother had made them. Her mother had passed away and the daughter was keen to have them repaired so she could enjoy them again and remember her mother.

Luckily the damage wasn’t too bad on either lamp (compared to some I have had in the past). The sweet little cherry lamp had damage to the decorative collar around the top. Luckily I have a reasonable amount of old glass colours in stock and was able to match the yellow very well. I made a template of the shape and cut new pieces. The damaged areas of broken glass and torn foil were removed and the new glass was foiled using copper strip tape. The foil can be soldered, which is what holds the pieces together. Then the new soldered areas are blacked with a patina and cleaned so they blend in with the originals.

The other lamp had damage to one large panel. Again, I was lucky to have a piece of beige glass in stock that blended in with the original glass. The broken panel had to be scored and knocked out in sections before the damaged foil was removed around the edges. Next the new piece was cut and foiled before soldering back into place. This all takes longer than described in a few words here of course.

The owner was very happy when she got the lamps back, saying, “Just wanted to say a huge thank you for the repairs you did on the lampshades. They are remarkable and I am delighted with your work. You have done a really great job. They remind me of my Mum as she so used to enjoy making these and I am thrilled that I can use them again in my home.”
