It is always fun to make a unique stained glass piece for a customer. Recently I was asked to make a wall plaque based on my blue heart plaque. This would be for a special 50th birthday present for the man’s wife.

The brief was for something that had the feel of the blue heart plaque he had seen on my website, but larger, and made in pink, white and red stained glasses.

As stained glass is quite heavy, we agreed the size would be about 19cm tall.

I drew up a suggested design for approval. It comprised seven hearts layered one upon the other, with wire embellishments. One wire piece was formed with an arrow head, reminiscent of the symbol of true love – a heart pierced with an arrow.

The customer was very happy with the design and colours. However, having asked for his wife’s name and ’50’ to be painted on the front, he decided against that idea subsequently.

I went ahead and made the design, using copper foil technique. As you can see from the images, the finished piece came out very similar to the concept drawing.

I added a secure loop to the top so that it could hang on a wall.

The customer was delighted with this special stained glass gift.
